The Lawns to Legumes Pocket Garden Native Planting project aims to promote biodiversity and provide habitat for pollinators in urban areas. This project replaced a portion of the front lawn with a pocket garden featuring native plants. The majority of the plant selections were straight species natives, highlighting the importance of creating pollinator habitat and the benefits of using native plants in garden design. Lawns to Legumes grant funding was approved and this project is mapped with Blue Thumb & Metro Blooms.
For this project, I worked with the homeowner to come up with a bed shape and planting plan for the front garden along the street and up the side of the driveway. I then prepared the area by removing grass, sheet-mulching the bed, adding compost, and natural wood chip mulch. Plants were sourced from a variety of local nurseries and installed in the summer of 2022.
